Beside

Marie Béland

BESIDE is the third work in a trilogy led by Montreal choreographer Marie Béland, which explores how we relate to others using real-time fake news, BESIDE relies entirely on the radio stations of each city in which the play is performed. Performers can only repeat what they hear on the radio into their headphones, they can only do the movements learned from public affairs shows seen on television.

Dispossessed of both their bodies and their words, they still try to cohabit, side by side (beside), and to communicate something a little true when everything is false. Each BESIDE show is a new show, even though the fall is always the same. In French as in English, in Montreal as in London, spoken radio inevitably carries them into this same trap. But, aren’t we all equally caught in this trap?
